Glacier Hiking Tonight KROQ Locals Only @ Roxy

Glacier Hiking tonight @ The Roxy

If you’re skipping the not-so-secret secret pre-Coachella My Bloody Valentine show at the El Rey theater tonight (yeah, us too), then you may want to head over to The Roxy to catch Glacier Hiking.   KROQ Locals Only presents tonight’s show, and these locals have been showing up on more and more industry ‘watch-lists’ lately, especially after leaving some big impressions at this year’s south-by… http://www.myspace.com/glacierhiking

File Under: Stuff We Like – L.A. Edition

Local Flavor

Local Flavor

Tonight at The Echo catch local L.A. favorites HEALTH and Abe Vigoda

Fresh out of the studio (their 2nd album Get Color is due out in the Fall) HEALTH is once again gearing up for tour across the U.S. and Europe.  Following from their string of dates with Nine Inch Nails and Of Montreal last year, expect big strides in ’09 from this band…  Supporters Abe Vigoda just released their new EP Reviver on L.A.’s PPM Records (the label started by Dean from No Age), which shows a move in the more conventional direction for the “tropical punk” band.  Both acts, though once considered “Smell bands” after the downtown L.A. venue, are now reaching fans worldwide.

Expect to see a packed house tonight…

April Smith @ Mercury Feb. 26

April Smith @ Mercury Feb. 26

Those in the City of Cities would do well to stop by the Mercury Lounge this Thursday night at 7:30PM to catch April Smith & The Great Picture Show’s showcase performance.  This Brooklyn songstress has been racking-up the miles crisscrossing the country (don’t worry, her bus runs on veggie-oil) supporting JD Souther on his most recent national tour.  Apparently the legendary songwriter handpicked her for the tour after scouring the internets, and he isn’t the only one taking notice… With press picking up and an IMA Best Pop/Rock Song award for her tune “Colors”, we’ve heard the tiptoeing of labels and publishers.

Check it out – we’re digging the Dexter inspired “Terrible Things”

It’s Still About The Music

As Tall As Lions @ Troubadour 2/18

By: Rodel Delfin

Amidst the turmoil happening in our biz and the economy, we turn to moments where we can escape from the doom and gloom talk surrounding us. For yours truly and we’ll assume it’s the same for most of you, that outlet is music, and it serves as a reminder why we got in this nutty business in the first place.  We were fortunate to experience that moment at the Troubadour last Wednesday night (2/18). Having seen hundreds of shows at the historical LA club, we hadn’t step foot in the place in months.  Luckily bypassing the line of fans waiting to get in the venue, which was already filled to capacity, it was nice to see familiar faces and be greeted by the club’s doorman. Inside, we joined the legion of fans that were there to see As Tall As Lions. We weren’t there to scout or review, but in attendance as a fan. After all, the band’s 2006 self-titled release has proven to be one of our favorite albums in recent years.  And it’s a shame it didn’t get the proper exposure it deserved.  The show was part of the Long Island-based ensemble’s current Los Angeles work stint, which includes recording their next LP. One surprising observation of the night was the makeup of the young audience jam-packed inside, who on the surface would not seem to have the taste for ATAS’ sophisticated sound, which blends a fusion of Brit-pop, jazz and indie rock.  As a friend at the show commented… “the band is like a mix of the Doves, early Coldplay and throw in a little Thievery Corp.” Yet the crowd on hand could have easily been there for a Spill Canvas show, which goes to show the far-reaching audience potential that the band possesses. Their set featured a few new songs, but it focused on their crowd-pleasing repertoire from their last album. They capitalized on displaying their growth and maturity as a group, which was clearly visible since the last time I saw them perform in LA two years prior. The highlight of the evening was their encore performance of crowd favorite “Love Love Love,” where ATAS front man Dan Nigro invited the audience on stage for a sing-a-long.  And for us, it was that special moment when you realize you’re seeing a great band in a small, intimate setting, before the rest of the world knows about them…
